A grand hymn to life: Immer noch Sturm (Storm Still) by Peter Handke is a trip between times, dreams and worlds. Handke takes us from the Europe of the last century to the present, recounting the history of his Slovenian ancestors. Inspired by posthumous letters, oral traditions and pictures in his own recollections, he follows the traces of memory: “It's not me that doesn't leave you alone. It doesn't leave me alone, never alone. You do not leave me alone”.

During the Nazi era, a small Slovenian family in Carinthia is under threat due to the ban on their language and the resettlement policy. They find a way to resist and after the end of the war, after a few short weeks of relishing their hard-won freedom, once again they feel repressed and excluded. Reminiscing, the narrator summons his ancestors and conjures this scenario as an old black and white photo. He's retouched himself into it, and thus the photo gradually comes to life. The first-person narrator, the author as an old man, the dreaming and recounting protagonist, sees himself growing up as a child. He sees himself asleep in the roots of an apple tree, stepping out from behind his mother as a young man who wants to take his life into his own hands. He invents playful comedic figures who quarrel with each other, rejoice or grieve, meets his grandparents, aunts and uncles. The narrator himself turns into a guest in this remembered community that brings him back to his childhood home. Now he is no longer a stranger.

Coproduction with Salzburger Festspiele; premiere 12.08.2011 during the Salzburg Festival; Hamburg premiere 17.09.2011 at Thalia Theater; last showing 22.03.2018 in Volksbühne.

press voices
