With Fever Room the Thai film maker and artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul moves his cinema into the theatre, on stage, developing an actorless play where the projectors comes to life. The 150 viewers face the projection screen, which eventually disappears, as do the protagonists, their voices and their images. Based on Weerasethakul’s Cemetery of Splendor (2015), the figures here are resurrected as ghosts: an eternally slumbering war veteran, whose post-traumatic comatose state is watched over by the female figure. Beneath the hospital lies an old cemetery, where a mythical war has been waging for ages. Situated in the northeastern of Thailand, Weerasethakul’s birthplace, the hospital becomes the central location for the transition from reality to transcendence.
