The publisher Das kulturelle Gedächtnis (cultural memory) will present three books that mark important German events or are an event in itself such as the Grimm Dictionary. The first is the rediscovered novel ‘Es waren ihrer sechs’ (‘There were six of them’) by Alfred Neumann, that recounts the story of Sophie and Hans Scholl. The plot begins with the arrest and depicts the interrogations, court case and day of execution of the two resistance fighters. Neumann’s heroes are ambivalent and harbor inner turmoil and brittle biographies. ‘No German Poet has portrayed the psychology of power and the intellectual technique of political intrigue so consistently’. – Hermann Kesten. Max Freiherr von Oppenheim’s ‘Memorandum regarding the revolutionising of the Islamic Regions of our enemies’ describes a plan born out of the first world war, whose consequences are still at work today: the mobilisation of Arabic, Persian and Afghan Muslims to Holy War. This is how the German Reich wanted to weaken its opponents of war and cut them off from their reinforcements in their colonies. This ‘Jihad-Plan’ in which terrorism was used as a weapon, was developed by one of the most influential orientalists of that time: Max von Oppenheim. His memorandum, the concrete plan of action for arms smuggling, the carrying out of arson attacks and the use of propaganda, reads like a book of terror – the Jihad made in Germany.
