“Every drama contains a fragment of hope,” says the Syrian writer Mohammad Al Attar, who lives in Berlin. His theatrical journey with the director Omar Abusaada condenses the travails of war and what it means to endure them. Theatre is their tool to deconstruct the complex reality of the struggle in Syria. With Iphigenia they have now completed their project on antiquity, dedicated to the lives of Syrian displaced women. After their adaptation of Euripides’ Trojan Women (2013) in Jordan, and Antigone of Shatila (2014), in Lebanon, now follows Iphigenia in Tempelhof. Based on Euripides’ almost 2500-year-old piece, the script and stage set were developed together with a group of Syrian women currently living in Berlin. In dialogue with Euripides, on this theatrical evening, they raise their voices and through their stories project their immediate reality onto the stage. A hyperrealist, condensed, artificial reality. Can migratory movements be understood as a precarious form of cosmopolitanism? Here at Tempelhof, in the direct vicinity of one of the largest refugee shelters in Berlin? The performers collaborate with the author and director on a personal reinterpretation of the Greek tragedy. Set against the backdrop of one of the greatest tragedies of our time.
