I'm all lost in the supermarket
I can no longer shop happily
I came in here for that special offer
A guaranteed personality...

(The Clash 1979)

The second episode of Pop Culture and Identity examines the relationship between pop culture and the market. When rock'n roll entered post-war Europe it was part of a promise of salvation in a free market. The developing music industry was entirely a part of the new capitalist system. Ever since many artists have attempted to avoid this type of exploitation. New forms like collective structures and DIY subcultures began to grow, particularly alongside the punk movement at the beginning of the 80s. Public promotion of pop culture is a relatively recent attempt to place an expanded cultural perception opposite pure market logic. Some criticise this, calling it “state pop”. With illustrious gestures we will analyse these complex circumstances.
