Concert

8 / 6 € presale tickets or from the box office, doors 8 pm, concert 9 pm

Organized by the French artist Saâdane Afif and performed by the musicians Anas Maghrebi (Berlin) and Pierre Peres (Montpellier), this concert marks the conclusion of a series of exhibitions by Afif, dealing with questions of belonging and foreignness.

In 2014 the artist produced two identical sculptures representing replicas of a lamppost from Düren’s train station - including a signboard of the name of the city and miniature speakers that transmit live announcements from the station. By presenting them simultaneously in the Leopold-Hoesch Museum Düren and at the 8th Berlin Biennale under the titles « Ici. » (here) and « Là-bas. » (there) he explored the notion of being “here and “there”, being “from here” and “from there”.

In a next step Afif commissioned artists and friends like Federica Bueti & Jan Verwoert, Ryan Gander, Raimar Stange or Clara Meister among others, to write lyrics that interpret the works and presented the texts on the walls surrounding the installations.

In 2017, Afif reactivated these two parallel exhibitions in the Leopold-Hoesch Museum and in La Panacée in France. This time he gave the « Ici. » lyrics to a musician based in Germany (Anas Maghrebi) and the « Là-bas. » lyrics to a musician based in France (Pierre Peres), who both chose a few and composed them into songs.

A final evening staging a double concert by the musicians at Roter Salon - Volksbühne, will finally unify the here (Ici.) and the there (Là-bas.).

A first edition of this performance is organized by la Panacée at The Black Sheep in Montpellier on January 11th, 2018.

Sky Walking DJ-Set with DJ Kohlrabi
Verena Issel (Set design)

8 / 6 € presale tickets or from the box office, doors 8 pm, concert 9 pm

An experimental band project originally created at the bar in the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg, the SKY WALKING label quickly developed into a forum for exchange for previously uncategorisable, improvised and completely undiscovered music. As a platform it now connects a large number of artists from various fields including: Sollmann & Gürtler, Schluss, Eve Essex, Nika Son and Konrad Sprenger.

With their extremely dynamic, fragile and surprising improvisations, Schluss - aka Éric Falconnier and Joachim Schütz - break with musical conventions. Their debut album, 28, has just been released on the SKY WALKING label. Joachim Schütz has worked in numerous collaborative formats with Ellen Fullman, Konrad Sprenger, Arnold Dreyblatt and Samara Lubelsky, among others. Éric Falconnier is part of a group called Gebrochene Beine.

Kyoto-born video artist and musician Aiko Okamoto - aka DJ Kohlrabi aka Mo Chan - is part of a network called female:pressure and co-founder of TOKONOMA, a Kassel based project space. One of her most recent projects took Okamoto to Kassel to participate in documenta 14 as a producer of Narrowcast House of Anton Kats to curate cultural radio programm. As part of SKY WALKING, she’s performing together with Pete Kersten - aka Lawrence - for this concert.

Especially for this performance, visual artist Verena Issel has designed a new spatial installation that transports musicians and spectators into a persiflage of a landscape of ancient ruins. Issel studied fine arts at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg and classical philology (Latin and Ancient Greek) at the Universität Hamburg, and now lives and works in Berlin. She primarily creates extensive installation works, which have been recently shown at Kunstverein Münster / LWL Museum Münster, TRAFO Kunsthall Oslo and Galerie Oechsner, Nuremberg.

06.03: facetime with Jesse Darling & Ziúr: The Low Bar

English, 8 / 6 € presale ticket or from the box office, doors 8 pm, concert 9 pm (no entry after 9 pm)

You end up for an evening at the bar on the border of purgatory where the protagonists of jokes come to drink for partial eternity. Everyone is talking about the next place and how to get there. Can you find your way out before the last round at the end of time?

A performance of music and spoken word by Jesse Darling and Ziúr, organized by facetime and Berlin Community Radio as part of a series that brings together artists from different fields who collaborate on a piece for the Roter Salon. Each performance will later be broadcasted as a radio play.

Jesse Darling is an artist working in sculpture, text, installation, sound and drawing. Their work and research is broadly centered on technology and subjectivity from (post)-modernity to (post)-internet: The science and magic of meaning production.

Ziúr is a musician, creating in a spirit of freedom and experimentation, taking seemingly incompatible influences and balancing them into a sound, that is both advanced and precise. It's music which beckons you into an alternate world; wonderfully alien pop that eschews conventions.

31.12: New Year`s Eve party

Doors: 22:00 - 05:00

At Roter Salon 9DJINN - a DJ alias of visual artist Sandra Mujinga (also known under Naee Roberts with her pop-flavoured live perfomance persona) blends her original edits of pop music, restrained take on afrobeats and club sounds to prepare us for 2018 +++ hot tracks only +++

Following is London based producer and performer SEGA BODEGA who has built a reputation as being one of the UK’s most innovative and precocious creative minds. Inspired as much by his close network of peers as his love of cinematic soundscapes, his work has already seen him chalk up a comprehensive back catalogue of music spanning genre, style and composition. In a live setting, Sega Bodega continues to play riotous club shows across the UK and Europe.

Timur Tokdemir aka MECHATOK (Staycore, Bala Club) hails from Munich but now calls Berlin his home. Mechatok creates his own abstract and minimal take on pop, combining elements of ambient, stripped-down yet addictive hooks and mind-bending textures. In his DJ sets Mechatok juggles club music, melodic pieces and rap and tells stories of melancholy, which also radiate with uplifting energy.

Belgian producer SKY H1 debuted on the Berlin label Creamcake in 2015 and signed to Codes (sublabel of PAN) in 2016. Her live synth meditations, beautiful and exuberant, will soundtrack the first hour of 2018 in the Volksbühne's Sternfoyer.

And eddying in the backwaters of Tiki subculture, SIR HENRY will turn the Grüner Salon into an easy listening organ lounge for the chillout/fallout crowd, invoking the spirit of the Volksbühne Schmalzwald of the 90's on his Solina Eminent organ throughout the night.
