Danish choreographer and dancer Mette Ingvartsen is a member of Volksbühne’s artistic team. She will start the first season with two new choreographies and a performative conference: 21 pornographies, to come (extended) and The Permeable Stage.They are the culmination of her work over the past five years, and explore the connection between sexuality, power and the body politics. Due to the increasing visibility of bodies in intimate situations and their media exposure, the boundaries between private and public are becoming blurred.

Writing a novel about libertinage from his prison cell in 1785, Marquis de Sade declared that the nature of human passions authorises crime. This moment in Western modernity marks the moral ambivalence in the bind between sexual liberation and power. Today pornography includes a politically wide range of expressions and uses, from queer and feminist stances to sexualised torture in war. Starting from the idea that pornography has leaked into many areas of society, Mette Ingvartsen explores the operations of the pornographic through a collection of erotic and affective materials. Most of them have little to do with explicit sex, yet they show some characteristics of the pornographic: expressions of cruelty, clinical precision, violence and pain, but sometimes also of laughter, excitement and thrill.

to come (extended) explores the lack of distinction between private, public and intimate space. In a performance that literally disrupts erotic orders, a group of 15 performers questions the notion of individual sexual freedom by working on orgiastic relations. The bodies of the performers merge into a collective group formation by making their surfaces indistinguishable from one another. Working directly on how bodies can physically connect, mechanisms of desire are rethought by experimenting with sexual, orgasmic and social expressions. The performance challenges the use orgasmic structures in theater by proposing extended states of pleasures in which excitement is both excessively slowed down and energetically sped up.

In this edition of The Permeable Stage Mette Ingvartsen invites theorists, artists and musicians to share their work through a series of late night lectures, film screenings and a concert. The topics of the lectures by Petra Van Brabandt, Melanie Richter-Montpetit, Austin Gross and Marie-Luise Angerer resonate with issues at stake throughout the rest of the evening‘s program. They question sexualized technologies of security and discipline in contemporary contexts of war, migration and capitalism and explore resistant potentials of wet aesthetics and queer - feminist pornographic art. The associated film program, 21 pornographies on Film will be screened between the performances. The Permeable Stage finishes Saturday night with a concert by the electro-brass duo Die Vögel.
