Literature

What is evil? In his stories Lorenz Just pursues the answer to this question. He is not concerned with definite answers, rather with the vividness, the visual, the truth of evil. The people, stories and spaces that he relates have been polluted by evil in various ways. And they bear responsibility. A man lounges in a bathtub, musing about his life, and reveals himself to be a former warlord.
Just casts a light on his subject, without passing judgement, and evokes evil as a powerful yet ambivalent category. A bold game with fiction, the authentic and literary models

Lorenz Just, born in 1983, studied Islamic Studies in Halle (Saale). During his studies, he spent quite a bit of time in both Egypt and Lebanon at the Orient Institute in Beirut. He also travelled to Yemen, Syria and Iran. From 2011 to 2015 he studied at the German Institute for Literature in Leipzig, and was a finalist in the MDR-Literaturwettbewerb (Central German Broadcasting's literary contest) in 2014. His biography Mohammed. Das unbekannte Leben des Propheten (Mohammed: The unknown life of the prophet) was published in 2015. Der böse Mensch (The Evil Person) is his fiction debut. He lives in Hanover.
