Volksbühne Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

The Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz in Linienstrasse, Berlin-Mitte, was built by the architect Oskar Kaufmann between 1913 and 1914 and seats over 800 people. The construction of the theatre was financed solely by donations from members of the Verein Freie Volksbühne (Association for a Free People’s Theatre), consisting of so-called “workers’ pennies”. The Volksbühne has always been defined by strong directors, playwrights and artistic personalities – Max Reinhardt, Erwin Piscator, Benno Besson, Heiner Müller, Frank Castorf, Christoph Schlingensief – constantly renegotiating the boundaries of the theatrical. Today we are witnessing an epochal shift, where the performing arts are faced with new global issues and expansion into digital media. The Volksbühne will be presenting its programme at different venues in the future. The focus will be on our in-house theatre and dance productions, performed on the main stage at Rosa Luxemburg Platz.

The Roter Salon will remain a place for a broad variety of formats and encounters. New and diverse literature, music, film, performance and theory will be showcased, discussed and celebrated here. Armen Avanessian is expanding his discourse on philosophy with the series Armen Avanessian & Enemies.

The Grüner Salon, which was leased to an external operator over recent years, will also resume as a Volksbühne venue. The Berlin-based artistic duo Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff are programming the Grüner Salon on a weekly basis since November.

In addition to the Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz and the Rote and Grüne Salon venues, the exterior of the Rosa Luxemburg Platz and the third floor of the building in which the youth theatre P14 rehearse and perform pieces, will be utilised. Completely new additions are the new venues at Tempelhof and the online platform Volksbühne Fullscreen. The Prater in Prenzlauer Berg, which has also served as an additional venue for the Volksbühne since 1992, is undergoing refurbishment and is scheduled to be in use again by the end of 2019.
