Ari Benjamin Meyers

Ari Benjamin Meyers is an artist, composer and conductor, who lives and works in Berlin. Born in 1972 in New York, he trained at the Juilliard School, Yale University and the Peabody Institute, and is considered a specialist for interdisciplinary productions in the fields of music, art and theatre. In his works, the artist explores structures that redefine the performative, participative and intangible aspects of music. Meyers regards music as a time-based medium – analogue to film, video or performance. By involving the audience, he tries to raise the awareness for new forms of perception of music. In recent years, he has dedicated himself intensively to the dynamics between stage and auditorium, between musicians and museum or gallery visitors. Ari Benjamin Meyers is musical director of the staged group exhibition Il Tempo del Postino, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Philippe Parreno (Manchester International Festival, 2007 and Art Basel, 2009). The book Music on Display about his recent works is available from Walther König Verlag, (2016).

Selected collaborations: 55th Venice Biennale with Anri Sala (2013); dOCUMENTA 13 with Tino Sehgal (2012); To the Moon via the Beach, LUMA Foundation, Arles (2012); T.451, Tensta Konsthall (2012); K.62/K.85, Performa 09, New York (2009); NY.2022, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008) all with Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster; For the director Ulrich Rasche he developed stage compositions, among them for Danton’s Death (2015) The Robbers (2016), Seven Against Thebes/Antigone (2017).
