Marino Formenti

Known for his unique combination of emotion and intelligence, Marino Formenti is one of the most interesting musicians of our times, constantly seeking to redefine the experience of music. “The Glenn Gould of the 21st Century” according to the Los Angeles Times, Formenti’s pleasure in experimenting with new and unexpected combinations has led to the development of unique projects and concerts in alternative formats. In his recitals Kurtag’s Ghosts and Liszt Inspections, there is a continuous flow of dialogue between the compositions, going far beyond the conventional limitations of piano recitals. In Nowhere, Mariano Formenti plays, sleeps, and eats in a temporary house open to the public, seeking to disappear through the music. One to one is a project originally produced by Art Basel and also presented at Berlin Art Week, offering a musical encounter of two to ten hours for one spectator at a time. In his most recent projects, the film Schubert und Ich, Formenti rehearses Franz Schubert music with non-musicians, guiding and inspiring them through his own interpretations.

Formenti has participated in several international festivals in Salzburg, Lucerne, Edinburgh, Schleswig-Holstein, Ravinia, and Aspen. He has performed at concert halls in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, London, Zurich, Moscow, Tokyo, and Los Angeles. He has collaborated with the New York and Munich Philharmonics and the Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the direction of maestros Franz Welser-Möst, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Gustavo Dudamel. He has directed concerts at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Vienna’s Musikverein, Berlin’s Konzerthaus, and Salle Pleyel in Paris, as well as in Rome, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, and Tokyo. He directed the Austrian première of Kurt Weill’s opera Der Protagonist and in 2010 directed a chamber version of Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel. Formenti has worked with some of the greatest living composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Gyorgy Kutag, and Salvatore Sciarrino.

In 2009, he received the Belmont Prize for Contemporary Music from the Forberg-Schneider Foundation in Munich.
