Sandra Hüller

Sandra Hüller, born in Suhl, Thuringia in 1978, is one of the most talented actors of her generation. After her training at the Ernst Busch Schauspielschule, and first acting roles at the Theaterhaus Jena and at the Schauspielhaus Leipzig, she became a full-time ensemble member of the Theater Basel in 2002, and in 2003 was named best new talent of the year by Theater heute magazine. She made her feature film debut in 2004 with a role in Hans-Christian Schmid’s film Requiem, for which she was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize, the Silver Bear at the Berlinale and the German Film Award. Despite her success, Hüller continued to focus on theatre in the following years. Her roles include work at the Staatsschauspiel Hannover (Hanover State Theatre), the Theater Freiburg, Volksbühne Berlin, Munich Kammerspiele and at the Ruhrtriennale. She has long-term working relationships with the directors Johan Simons, Barbara Frey, René Pollesch, Schorsch Kamerum, Stephan Kimmig and Tom Schneider. For her role in Elfriede Jelinek’s Die Straße. Die Stadt. Der Überfall. (The Road. The City. The Robbery. (2012), directed by Johan Simons, Munich Kammerspiele), she received the 3sat award at the 50th Berlin Theatertreffen 2012 and in 2013 was named actress of the year again by Theater heute magazine. In Toni Erdmann (2016), Maren Ade’s critically acclaimed feature film, she stars alongside Peter Simonischek in the female lead role. For her portrayal of the uptight management consultant in the film, Sandra Hüller won the Bavarian, German and European Film Award and numerous national and international accolades. Even after achieving global success, she still considers film to be a mere flirtation, while her great love remains the German stage. After living in Basel, Berlin and Munich, Sandra Hüller now lives in Leipzig.
