Morten Grunwald

The Danish actor, director and theatre director Morten Grunwald, born in Odense, Denmark in 1934, attended drama school at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen from 1957 to 1960.

After first assignments as an actor in the early ’70s, Grunwald assumed the artistic direction of various Copenhagen theatres. From 1971 to 1980 he directed the Bristol Music Center Theater, 1980 to 1992 the Betty Nansen Theatre and most recently from 1976 to 1998 the Østre Gasværk Theatre, where Eh Joe premieres in 2016 with Grunwald in the title role, directed by Walter Asmus.

From 1968 to 1998, Grunwald played the role of Benny Frandsen in the 14-episode Danish film series The Olsen Gang. The comedy thriller quickly attained a dedicated following in Denmark, Poland and in particular the GDR. “In the West The Olsen Gang was almost unknown, but for the German Democratic Danes of the East, they soon became cult classics. That has remained the case for several generations,” writes Uwe Tellkamp in Grunwald’s autobiography, Meine Tage in Gelben Socken. (My Days in Yellow Socks) which was published in 2014.
